Dave Griffiths is currently exploring the possibilities of botanical photochemistry, combining local flora, solar UV energy, and large-format microfilm. Working across gardens and cultural landscapes, he produces "stress responses" that record plant resilience in reaction to environmental conditions—a process that parallels his unfolding alignment with neurodivergent sensory experience.
During 2023-26 residency at Joya Arte y Ecología in the Sierra María-Los Vélez, Griffiths formulated developers and toners from dominant trees—Aleppo pine, almond, and olive—to activate the chemistry of understory species and draw out the latent tones of calcareous soil. Utilising ultra-slow document film outdoors enables a deliberate, sensory approach to making phytograms. The resulting work examines the formal tension between the informatic structure of document film and the wild agency of plants as they transcribe fossil-like prints of their ephemeral lives.
